    Notes
    • "During her childhood at Grimsby, Ontario, Vera was an accomplished concert pianist, taught by H. M. Howard. Ca1905 to 1911, she toured the Niagara Penn., giving concerts. Graduating from Grimsby high school at fifteen, she attended Alma College, St. Thomas, Ontario, where she studied music. During WWI, she worked in the office of a munitions plant in Hamilton, Ontario. Vera taught piano to several generations of Yarker children, one of whom (Jean Fisher) became an opera singer in Munich, Germany. She also was a leader in Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT, a United Church group) and 4H Homemaking clubs, despite ill-health for most of her life.  A fighter, she began life with a struggle, a broken hip and not breathing until the mid-wife dunked her into hot and cold water, while the doctor struggled to save her mother. Because of the broken hip, Vera did not walk until she was nearly four and suffered greatly from asthma. When she was six, the family doctor told her parents that she would not live much past that age if they did not sell the farm and move to a better climate. While mulling over that news, her father James began to plow the field which had many rocks. The plow hit one, throwing the handle into James' side, breaking a rib. He stomped into the house, grabbed the old Family Herald paper (a gold mine of information and fiction geared to the farming society), sat down and began looking for any farms for sale, even before going to see the doctor. Before long, James owned a fruit farm on the Niagara escarpment overlooking Grimsby. Vera was never quite sure if the reason they moved was because of her health, or because her father had had enough of rock farming! Moving to Grimsby did improve her asthma; unfortunately, moving to Yarker did not." -Lucy Martin [1]
