    Notes
    • "Don farmed with his father in the Ernestown Twp. Gore and also owned a trucking business, hauling milk to the Acmé Condensery in Sydenham, Ontario, and later years to the Acmé in Napanee, Ontario. Besides the milk, he moved various other loads (furniture, wood, honey, etc.). On 31 Oct 1944, Don and his family moved into Yarker, Ontario, eventually selling the farm. Don continued with his trucking business until retiring and moving to Napanee, Ontario. At one time, Don was on the school board of Brookside school (formerly called the Martin school), and after moving to Yarker, he was on the Camden(East) school board for over ten years, serving as secretary-treasurer. He was Fire Chief for the Yarker Volunteer Department, and served many years on the United Church Board and its Cemetery Board. c1945, he, with Kenneth Freeman, Merrill Wright and Rev. Wm. Fletcher, planned the new church in Yarker, now called Riverside United Church. The old stone Methodist one, built by the Saul brothers on one of the hills overlooking Yarker, was struck by lightening in 1938 on a Saturday evening. The fire was unnoticed until too late, as another building in Yarker had also been struck and set on fire during the same storm. The church had been decorated in readiness of Sunday's celebration of the 75th anniversary of it being built. Because of WWII, permission to build was long in coming due to the shortage of supplies, but the church was begun and the cornerstone laid c1947." - Lucy Martin [2]
